At last, he’s here, for the first time in Dallas, that fun-loving cat in the red-and-white hat! Dallas Children’s Theater (DCT) summons all Dr. Seuss fans for the North Texas Professional Premiere of DR. SEUSS’S THE CAT IN THE HAT, September 20 – October 27, 2013, at DCT’s Rosewood Center for Family Arts.

North Texas Professional Premiere of DR. SEUSS’S THE CAT IN THE HAT

KA2_7385With the trickiest of tricks and the craziest of ideas, he is ready to play.  He turns a rainy afternoon into an amazing adventure!  “We couldn’t be more excited to open our season with such a classic, hilarious show, especially for our 30th birthday,” says DCT’s Nancy Schaeffer, director of the play.  “It’s going to be an exhilarating roller-coaster ride of acrobatics and comedy, filled with all the classic rhyme, rhythm and repetition that Dr. Seuss fans know and love.

Experience all the wacky, zany joy that has made this one of the most treasured books of all time.  It’s definitely a very special, must-see theatrical event. “The Cat in the Hat” was first published in 1957 as Dr. Seuss’s second book for children.  It marked the transition of Theodor (Ted) Seuss Geisel from successful advertiser, illustrator and political cartoonist to world-famous children’s author.  Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat” changed the way children learn how to read.  His curious rhyming tale is still adored 50 plus years later with over 11 million copies in more than 12 different languages in print today.

The play, DR. SEUSS’S THE CAT IN THE HAT, was adapted for the stage in 2009 by the prestigious National Theatre of Great Britain and DCT closely followed its success there.

“We are always on the look-out for the newest and most wonderful plays for our audiences,” says DCT’s leader, Robyn Flatt.  “We grabbed this as soon as it was available.  It’s the perfect kick-off to our very special birthday season.”

The curtain rises to reveal the house of Boy, Sally and Mother.  The bird in the tree sneezes, the thunder roars, and the rain pours down.  Sally and the Boy are stuck inside, as the sun refuses to shine on a wet, cold day.  Sally and Boy must resign to sitting, sitting, and more sitting while Fish is swimming and splashing about in his bowl.  Then, a whistle is sounded and something goes “bump.”  The children and Fish are startled!  What could it be?  It’s the Cat in the Hat, the funniest and most mischievous cat they have ever met.  What “new tricks” and mayhem will he show them INSIDE the house?  Will Mother find out?  Better see for yourself what this play is about!

In addition to the thrill of seeing the play, DCT continues to do its part to extend the theater experience by providing engagement opportunities around the show itself.  For the month of September, a giant Cat in the Hat is perched on the roof of the Rosewood Center to greet eager patrons in the parking lot and garden, and inside the lobby and gallery, there are a host of Seussian decorations, photo opportunities and inspirational quotes by the author.

After each performance there will be an interactive discussion and demonstration called, “Cat in the Hat – How’d We Do That?”  Some lucky patrons will even get the chance to go up on stage and experience what it takes to create magical moments from the show. And not to be forgotten, DCT’s autographs tradition continues in the lobby for children excited to meet the actors after the show.
