Post image for West Side Story Soars in to the Music Hall With Latin Flair

The revival of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s  West Side Story  hit the stage at the State Fair Music Hall with lots of Latin flair. The opening night of the Dallas Summer Musicals’ West Side Story was packed with fans of the classic Broadway musical. A few Fosse-esque dance moves added to Jerome Robbins’ choreography updated  the show and made this slightly more urban,  bi-lingual version of West Side Story jump off the stage with a renewed energy and excitement that brought the show to life.

With Maria, Anita and the Sharks singing Stephen Sondheim’s classic songs like “America“, “I Feel Pretty” and “Tonight” in Spanish, with lyrics by Tony Award winner (In The Heights), Lin-Manuel Miranda, giving West Side Story   a kick  and a more authentic realism. You could feel the tension between the two gangs and got a full sense of Lt, Schrank’s hatred of the Sharks.

As a fan of the 1962 movie starring Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno, Richard Beymer and George Chakiris, it was a pleasure to see the show on stage. Evy Ortiz’ and Ross Lekites are  wonderful as the star-crossed lovers, Maria and Tony, Their voices soared in perfect harmony in songs like “One Hand, One Heart” and “Tonight“.  Michelle Aravena was a spicy Anita to German Santiago’s hot-blooded Bernardo.

West Side Story  is playing at the Fair Park Music Hall through October 23, 2011. Parental guidance is suggested for this show. Appropriate for ages 10 and up. Please note that this show contains gang simulated masturbation

The Samuel Lynne Galleries, located in the heart of the Dallas Design District on Dragon Street showcases the work of resident artists, JD Miller and Phillip J Romano, in addition to other works by prominent 21st century artists from the Reflectionist  movement.

The Artists

JD Miller

Contemporary artist JD Miller combines painterly chromatic expression with a sculptor’s physical application of paint to create multi-dimensional images on canvas. The result is an emotional explosion of 3-D sculptural oils, rich in light, form and color, which create a unique mood and signature ambiance.

His reputation has increased dramatically in recent years, as recognition of his 3-D oil technique has become widely acknowledged by both artists and collectors alike. Miller presently works out of his studios in the design district of Dallas, Texas. See photos of JD Miller’s paintings.

Philip J. Romano

Restaurateur, investor, humanitarian, author and now artist Philip J. Romano knows a thing or two about creation. He has created six new restaurant concepts: Fuddruckers, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, Spageddies, Cozymel’s, Rudy’s Country Store and BBQ and eatZi’s Market & Bakery. His concepts have generated more than a billion dollars a year and to date has generated over $10 billion in revenue.

For years, painting has been Romano’s passion and he gave away his work to friends and family who expressed enthusiasm about it, but he had not found a sense of definition in what he was creating until he met JD Miller and explored the idea of reflectionism and 3D-oil sculpting. See photos of Phllip J. Romano’s paintings.
