The Downtown Arts District definitely had a magical feel about it last night as many filled the Winspear for opening night of Beauty and the Beast. Disney always puts on the most magical shows, and this one followed suit and did not disappoint. Little girls…Both young and old who have fallen in love with this love story watched as the beautiful story came to life on the stage.
The set was charming and the costumes fantastic. The stage set ups were elegantly simple but created all the moods perfectly. The costumes were stunning and bright and the “Be Our Guest” scene was colorful and playful and truly amazing.
The cast made the show and all were effortlessly adept in their characters. You could hear little girls laughing throughout the venue at Gaston’s sidekick, Lefou, (Michael Fatica) performed his impeccably overly animated trips, blunders and falls. Gaston was flawlessly played by Nathaniel Hackman and his pompous air was entertaining. Belle (Liz Shivener) and Beast’s (Justin Glaser) voices were truly incredible and the pair complemented one another perfectly. The castles spell-bound staff was engaging and made the show with their witty and clever lines and their flamboyant costumes and accents. This is absolutely a perfect musical for a family night at the theatre and a play for girls young and old alike.
