LAMBARENA, VOLUNTARIES & MORE

Weekend I – May 3-5, 2013

Be exhilarated with the glorious and exuberant production of Val Caniparoli’s Lambarena. This visually stunning feast for the eyes and ears will treat the audience to a celebration of two cultures where incredible choreography, dancing, African rhythms and the melodies of Bach are infused to delight every soul!

…a musical and movement fusion of the classical and tribal…choreographer Val Caniparoli blurs the lines of classical ballet even further. Mixing classical style, traditional African dance, and African-inspired modern, the dancers roll, undulate, relevé and leap with fiery intensity.”

-Theater Jones

Experience the North Texas premiere of world renowned choreographer Glen Tetley’s critically acclaimed Voluntaries. Intensely personal, it is a tribute to the memory of choreographer John Cranko. Performed by 17 dancers, Voluntaries is a dance of life, death, hope and despair that exalts the freedom and potential of movement. It is an inward score with a beautiful sensibility of lyricism and emotional power.

Magnificent high-flying ensemble in avian silhouettes evokes flight and spirituality to a soaring Poulenc organ concerto. Mourning leads to hope and redemption.

-The Times, London

Three Pas de Deux

Rounding out this Texas Ballet Theater program are three Pas de Deux from Sylvia, Laila and the Swan and Ave’ Maria. Ave Maria is a dynamic and elegant lyrical pas de deux highlighting the graceful exchange between the ballerina and her male partner. Laila and the Swan Pas de Deux is a beautifully intertwined dance based on a Greek myth featuring a strong male swan and a delicate damsel. From the last act of the wonderful classic Sylvia, the couple will present a bouncy duet using the pizzicato music of Delibes, creating a new mature take on the traditional piece.

MOZART REQUIEM & THEME AND VARIATIONS

Weekend II – May 24-26, 2013

Back by popular demand and rated by The Dallas Morning News as the top dance performance of 2007, Texas Ballet Theater presents Ben Stevenson’s Mozart Requiem. Mozart’s music comes alive with this moving tribute to heroism that features a magnificent cast of the men of Texas Ballet Theater. Experience this acclaimed work as grieving moments give way to joy, affirmation and majesty. What a great way to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend!

Be thrilled with George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations. With glittering costumes, glorious choreography and demanding rigorous technical precision this production is a vision of the Imperial Ballet in its heyday at the Maryinksy Theatre. Classical, romantic, and modernist all at once and, it has been said that Theme and Variations is the “niece” of The Sleeping Beauty – bringing 19th century ballet to the 20th and now into the 21st.
