Flat Stanley DCTYou know this guy! In a whirlwind musical travelogue, Stanley – the ultimate exchange student – scours the globe to do something the world has never seen before, and learns that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Everyone’s two-dimensional friend has a new life at Dallas Children’s Theater (DCT) in The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley,  playing May 10 – June 2, 2013 at DCT’s Rosewood Center for Family Arts.

Who is Flat Stanley?

Stanley Lambchop is just like everyone else, but one night he makes a wish to be something special…and it comes true! Jeff Brown’s beloved children’s book, “Flat Stanley,” was written in 1964 and has become a literary and pop cultural phenomenon. The musical stage adaptation was published in 2008 and has been hitting the Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) national circuit to critical acclaim.

What I love about the show are all the teachable moments that don’t feel like lessons,” says guest director Michael Serrecchia, who makes his DCT debut. “It’s a fun, Broadway-style musical comedy about the value of being different and the importance of family.

Stanley is your ordinary, everyday, run-of-the-mill ten-year old, and for Stanley, life is too normal. He wants to do something amazing, something no one’s ever seen before, so he makes a wish to travel the world. That night, the bulletin board on the wall above Stanley’s bed comes loose and falls – right on top of him.

The next morning, Stanley Lambchop wakes up flat. Not just a little flat…really, really flat! Thus begins a quest to see the world, which comes surprisingly easy when you can travel through the postal system as a letter! He thwarts a robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris and surfs off the coast of Hawaii. He’s stamped, posted and cancelled from Hollywood to France to Honolulu and beyond. Once Stanley realizes that great adventures aren’t as special without his family there to share it with him, he wishes to become a three-dimensional boy once again. Careful what you wish for, Stanley! Enjoyed by ages 5 and above.

 A Southwest Professional Premiere

Dallas Children’s Theater guest director, Michael Serrecchia, became a part of American musical theater history in 1975 as an original cast member of the Pulitzer Prize winning musical, “A Chorus Line.” During his 18 years performing on Broadway, he worked and learned from some of the best – including Michael Bennett, Bob Fosse, Tommy Tune, Chita Rivera, Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, Carol Channing, Kander and Ebb, and Cy Coleman. Moving to Dallas allowed him to shift from performing to directing and choreographing. DCT is thrilled to enlist the talents of such a seasoned musical theater veteran.

What I find most fun about the show are the many, many characters played by five amazing, hysterically funny actors,” says Serrecchia. DCT’s Stanley, Clinton Greenspan, returns exactly one year from his DCT debut as Worm in “Diary of a Worm, a Spider and a Fly.” A North Texas star-studded ensemble joins him featuring BJ Cleveland, Deborah Brown, Natalie Weaver and Andy Baldwin (DCT debut).
