Teatro Dallas presents the 2013 Days of the Dead production, “Santos,” a collaborative piece commemorating the 40th anniversary of the execution of Santos Rodriguez that changed the course of civil rights in Dallas.
The Russian-Roulette style execution of 12-yr old Santos Rodriguez by a Dallas police officer united Latino & Black communities and sparked the protest march that developed into a riot at City Hall. Twenty years ago, Teatro Dallas commissioned the play, “Santos,” written by Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda, to educate the community about the tragedy and express the pain of the family and the city through theatre. Twenty years later, and forty years after the original tragedy, the story of Santos still resonates in today’s culture.
With local artists helping to truly embody the spirit of little Santos, we offer this production as communal therapy to Dallasites who still find relevance in this tragic tale. The various artistic elements will explore all aspects of the tragedy, including how it is paralleled with today’s socio-political climate.
Teatro Dallas’ annual Days of the Dead celebration was the first of its kind in Dallas 28 years ago. The production, in English, will include a collaboration with several local artists to combine live music, dance, visual art, spoken word, and theatre. A special reception will be held on the last weekend with Mexican delicacies traditionally prepared during the ancient holiday.
Presentations will be on Thursdays at 7:00pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm, and Sundays at 3:00pm, from October 11th – November 2nd. Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office.
